Comments: This recording is not from 1981 but is in fact from the December 4, 1979 performance at the Budokan Theater in Tokyo, Japan. It is apparently sourced from a low quality vinyl bootleg, complete with many crackles and pops, and runs quite a bit fast to boot (pun intended). Avoid.

Now, here's the really interesting thing about this show. Although this particular recording is in fact NOT of any performance on 5 February, and although the tourography does not reference a show on this date, one did in fact take place.

"NONSENSE!" you say. Yes, so did I. But the "smoking gun" as it were, was provided by website contributor Sparky Marky who not only shed some light on this performance but sent a scan of his ticket:

"... the date of the show I went to is 5th February 1981. I think you have it listed as 25th February. I do remember that the show was shortly after Eric had cancelled some US dates after an ulcer or something and this was a rescheduled show - whether that has any bearing on the date info or not, I don't know."

So now the question is - were there two performances at the Rainbow in the spring of 1981, or is the performance generally noted as the 25th misdated. Enquiring minds want to know ... anyone got a ticket stub from the 25th? ...

...To Be Continued ...

  • "this date is correct, the day after the Who played ( PT pissed and badly), I went to both. Eric used the Who's PA. Others said it was loud, but I was still deaf from the night before. Chas and Dave supported and came on for the encores. The performance was OK but not his best period. I think the concerts were for the Shelter Charity." - Anonymous
