>>3 post-70s songs with passion, fire and firepower:

Live-
1. "I Shot The Sheriff" from Live In Hyde Park. (to me this is the best one)
2. "Dont't Think Twice", Bob Fest
3. "Born Under A Bad Signe" The Legends - Montreaux Jazz Festival.

Studio Work
1. "Hold on I Coming" - RDTK (what a song...)
2."Bad Love" - Journeyman
3."Superman Inside" - Reptile

I saw Clapton for the first time this year in Porto Alegre (10.10.01) and at
the eletric set, seemed that he would pull up the strings of his Stracaster
for the aggressive form of playing. I never saw him play like this. I have
the impression that he was playing with rage, with this passion and and
firepower.

Thanks for sharing James. Boy, Jack is a pompous ass. How would you like
to work with that guy. He reminds me of other failed (in their own mind)
ego-maniacs I've know through the years.

>From Guitar World December 1989:
Were there any other guitarists [working with you on Journeyman], besides those already mentioned?
EC: Just George [Harrison], when we did George's track. He came [to New York City] for a week, and we did five of his songs - some of his spare and some he'd written especially for the album - and ended up using just one ballad, "Run So Far." It's a Willbury's type thing because he's very much a Willbury at the moment - in the throes of Willburyism. That was the only one of all
his songs that didn't have his augmented chord in it, which drives me crazy. It's lovely when it's with him - you know the one I'm talking about - but when I do it, it's a little bit wrong for me.

_Rock Lives_ 1989
"Run So Far" on Journeyman is a George Harrison song, and it also has his unmistakable slide guitar. George's slide attack is interesting because he's told me in the past that he didn't even get into slide until he joined you as a player with Bonnie and Delaney.
EC: Yeah, I suppose that's true! He got into Robert Johnson and the other blues slide players through collaboration with me and Delaney; we were listening to that stuff a lot. He took what he wanted from that and used his own melodic sense. He came up with something totally unique. Since then, I've heard a lot of people trying to imitate *George's* style.
For this album, he came into the studio with four or five songs, and that was the one he least expected me to choose, 'cause the others were more R&B- or rock and roll-oriented. But it had the solid character that we needed to put in the album, and I just loved the song.

Guitar Player August 1976
Are there any similarities between your electric slide playing and Duane [Allman's]?
EC: No, not a great amount, because I approach it more like George Harrison. Duane would play strictly blues lines; they were always innovative, but they were always in the blues vein. I'm somewhere in between him and George, who invents melodic lines often on the scales.

Rolling Stone October 1991
Let's start with the George Harrison tour. How did that come about?
EC: George and I have been friends for a great long time, and we've always seemed to be around when one of us needed the other one. And when I was on tour last year, especially in the Third World and South America and places like that, people kept asking me about George, about how he was and what he was doing. And when I got back to England, I reported all this to George, and we started talking, on a very lighthearted level, about going out on the road. And then, when I looked at my schedule for this year, I saw that I was
deliberately not planning to work very much, but I had all this stuff standing by, like lights and sound, and the best band in the world. And I thought, "Well, why not?" And I put it to George that he go out with us. All
he's got to do, essentially, is walk out on the stage and strum an acoustic guitar, and we'll do everything else. Nothing for him to worry about. And I put it to him, and he was delighted and scared at the same time -- really scared to death. Because it's been a long time, I mean fifteen years or so, since his last American tour.

Which he didn't like very much.
EC: He had an awful time. I think he lost his voice on day one, and there was a lot of dope and drink and all kinds of mad stuff going on, which didn't help him to recover his voice. But I think everything is different now, and I think it will be great. But he changed his mind about five different times, saying he'd do it and then he wouldn't do it. It was almost definitely off,
and at the last minute he changed his mind, so now it's back on again.

Why are you starting in Japan?
EC: On the practical level, it's the most efficient country in the world for putting on shows. And somehow it's a bit out of the way, so that he can go onstage and get over his stage fright without being right in the
international spotlight. I think if he came to the U.S. and he saw one bad review, he'd go straight home.

Greetings SDers,

This week's mp3 is Five Long Years, recorded on 28 April, 1995 at
Hallenstadion, Zurich, Switzerland. This is a blistering performance,
including keyboard and harp solos, as well as two tasty solos from EC, which
are quite atypical for how the song was usually performed on the blues tour.
Enjoy!!

Take care,
Josh Ritter

I have a copy of this on CD. It appears to have been a TV concert with EC,
SRV, Albert King, Dr. John, and others. The EC Tourography lists an April
15, 1987 taping of a B.B, King TV special. Is this the show? Anybody have
any additional information?

Thanks,

Dale
