Rock legend Clapton weds in secret - paper

LONDON, Jan 3 (Reuters) - British guitar legend Eric
Clapton has secretly married 25-year-old American
Melia McEnery, the mother of his baby daughter,
according to a newspaper report on Thursday.

Clapton, 56, tied the knot with McEnery, from
Columbus, Ohio, in a low-key ceremony at a church near
his Surrey, southern England, home on New Year's Day,
The Sun reported.

Guests were told they were attending the christening
of the couple's six-month-old daughter Julie Rose.

But after the baptism, Clapton and McEnery were called
forward by the vicar and exchanged vows.

Fellow rock musician Andy Fairweather-Low was in the
congregation, The Sun said.

His wife Barbara was quoted by the newspaper as
saying: "Everyone cheered when Eric stepped forward.
It was lovely, a total surprise to everyone."

The ceremony took place at St Mary Magdelen church at
Ripley, where Clapton's son, Conor, four, is buried.

He died after falling from a window in a skyscraper
apartment in New York 11 years ago and is immortalised
in Clapton's song "Tears in Heaven."

Clapton was married for nine years to Patti Boyd, whom
he stole from former Beatle George Harrison. They
divorced in 1988.

Clapton met McEnery, a graphic artist, on a trip to
Los Angeles.

The guitarist's spokesman, Vivian Gibson, told The
Sun: "He has nothing to say."

There was an interesting review--a positive one--of Buddy Guy's "Sweet Tea,"
in today's Washington Post (2 January 2002, p. C5). Here's an excerpt:

"[H]is habit of avoiding risk is often what hampers his studio albums:
Rather than revel in the raw roots of the form, Guy aims for
middle-of-the-road material that so entrances players like his friend and
admirer Eric Clapton: blues with the edge dulled down."

Dave,

1) I have never received as much spam as during the time AOL was my provider ;)
2) If they published their "anti-spam policies" then the few spammers which do
get blocked could work around the system.
3) Just another reason to *not* use AOL...

Wishing you all of the best in the new year!
Greg

AOL won't even deliver mail from Harvard. Seriously, this confirms my
suspicions that; 1) AOL is blocking mail intended for recipients based on
unpublished "anti-spam" policies and 2) even they do not know exactly what
will trigger this rejection.

Guitarist Clapton weds in private
January 3, 2002 Posted: 7:43 AM EST (1243 GMT)

Clapton wed in the Surrey village where he was brought up by his
grandparents

LONDON, England -- Legendary guitarist Eric Clapton married his 25-year-old
American girlfriend in a private ceremony on New Year's Day, the presiding
priest has said.

Relatives and friends had been invited to St Mary Magdelen Church in Ripley,
southwest of London, for the christening of the couple's six-month-old
daughter Julie Rose and Clapton's older daughter Ruth Patricia.

But after the baptisms, it was announced that the 56-year-old bluesman and
American Melia McEnery would marry during the same service -- to the
surprise of many of the guests.

In a statement, the Rev Christopher Elson said he was delighted the couple
had chosen Clapton's childhood home for the wedding.

The guitarist was born in Ripley and brought up by his grandparents, who
lived in the village.

Elson said: "It was a very happy occasion and I pray God's blessing upon
Eric and Melia in their married life as well as for Julie and Ruth at the
beginning of their Christian lives."

He added that he had known about the wedding for some time and helped the
couple plan the ceremony.

'Total surprise'

The wife of rock star Andy Fairweather-Low, who was a godfather to Julie
Rose, told The Sun newspaper: "We went there thinking it was just a
christening for the girls. But at the end of the ceremony the vicar said,
'We have two people here who want to get married as well.'

"Then Eric stepped forward and everyone cheered. Everyone was very happy for
them.

"It was a lovely day -- only close friends and family were invited as Eric
wanted to keep it private. It was a fabulous occasion for everyone there.

"Eric was wearing a dark suit and looked very smart. His bride was wearing
pale grey -- I think it was Armani."

Ruth, 16, was born after Clapton had an affair with her mother, Yvonne
Kelly, in 1983, but the rock star did not meet her until 1991.

Clapton met graphic artist Melia in Los Angeles in 1999 while working on an
album with BB King. Their daughter Julie was born last June in Melia's home
town of Columbus, Ohio.

Her parents attended the service with some of the couple's closest family
and friends.

Clapton buried his four-year-old son, Conor, at the same church in Ripley 11
years ago after the child fell from the 53rd floor of a Manhattan apartment.
The death inspired Clapton's hit single "Tears in Heaven."

Ginny Luckhurst, a London spokeswoman for Clapton's record label, WEA, said
the guitar legend was not expected to issue a statement.
