Dear friends,
Long time former Clapton employee, Alphi O'Leary has succumbed to cancer.
Alphi was with Eric for 25 years before he was let go of his duties before
the Pilgrim tour. He was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus in 2000. He
was one of the nicest guys you could meet and was very dedicated to his
boss.Despite the suffering he remained quite upbeat through his ordeal.

This is an obscure query, but does anyone know the band lineup (Dr John's
band) for the May 9, 1996 New York Duets show Eric performed with Dr John. I
haven't seen it listed anywhere I can think of.

Cheers,
Jon

Dear All,

As promised I am offering this to readers of the digest from this side of
the world!

Usual rules apply. If you receive a copy you will have to offer this to
others who were unlucky to miss out from me. I am restricting this offer to
Australia & New Zealand only. Those who get a copy from me you are free to
supply anyone you see fit. However if I send you a copy I will post your
email address on the digest. So if you are serious about helping fellow
slowhanders there is no escaping making this available to others.

I also do not believe in b&p. Anyone who gains a copy via this route is
fortunate and lucky that they did not have to buy or trade for it in the
first instance. This concert retails for US$50+ in various guises. For the
cost of 2CDs and a stamp I think we are all very grateful - I know I am.

First in best dressed.

Cheers,
David

I have the show - thanks to Olli! The first 4 responses get a copy.
You must promise to offer it in a similar manner to 4 people
on the list.

Enjoy
Dave

p.s. anyone made any artwork for this show?

Another interesting bit of news for American public television viewers:

PBS gets the blues

By Ed Meza

BERLIN (Variety) - Top directors Martin Scorsese, Wim Wenders and Mike Figgis
are joining forces with PBS to shoot six films about the blues.

The projects will examine the nature and emotional impact of blues music and
explain how it evolved from folk music into a world language. Also on board
to shoot episodes are directors Marc Levin ("Slam"), Richard Pearce ("A
Family Thing") and Charles Burnett ("The Wedding").

Scorsese is set to do the first picture in the series, "From Mali to
Mississippi," which traces the beginnings of the blues in Africa and its
journey to the New World with original compositions from contemporary artists
such as Ali Farka Toure, Salif Keita and Habib Koite.

Figgis takes a look at the blues' influence on British music of the 1960s
with artists including Eric Clapton, Tom Jones and the Rolling Stones.

Wenders' "Devil Got My Woman" looks at religious and secular elements in the
music with profiles of Skip James, Blind Willie Johnson and J.B. Lenoir.
Wenders won acclaim for his 1999 Afro-Cuban documentary "Buena Vista Social
Club."

Levin's installment, "Godfathers and Sons," follows Public Enemy frontman
Chuck D and Chicago blues label scion Marshall Chess as they bring together
hip-hop musicians and blues veterans for their jointly produced album.

Using documentary film material, Burnett highlights the blues' conflicting
spiritual and carnal dimensions in "Warming by the Devil's Fire," the
semi-fictional tale of a boy in 1955 Vicksburg, Miss. -- the director's
hometown.

Memphis is the focus in Pearce's "Moaning at Midnight," which showcases the
city that produced Howlin' Wolf, Otis Redding, B.B. King and Elvis Presley.
The picture offers never-before-seen footage of Wolf and Redding.

Can anyone confirm that 4 of the shows at Budokan were officially recorded? If so, does this mean there might be a live album?

Now that the dust has settled I've been thinking a bit about the Pilgrim and Reptile tours. In concert, between 98 and 99, EC really got a handle on those Pilgrim songs,
really learned how to expand them, improve them. So that by the time he got to Japan in 99 those songs were really in focus. And have continued to stay in focus, featured as they were on the Reptile tour.

On the other hand, I don't feel like the songs from Reptile he was playing, for the most part, ever came into focus. Many of them were just cast into exile (Ain't Gonna Stand For It, Traveling Light, Don't Let Me Be Lonely, Superman Inside). The
three that stuck (Reptile, Got You On My MInd, I Want A Little Girl) were sometimes well-performed, but never really expanded. And I have a hard time imagining, were he to do another tour, what he would keep in the set from Reptile. I don't feel
like he ever really got a handle on that album in performance. Which is too bad, because there are some really good songs on Reptile.

Dr. John's band in 1996 was:
Dr John: piano/vocals, Bobby Broom: guitar backing vocals, David Barard:
bass/backing vocals and Herman Ernest: drums/backing vocals. The DUETS show
also had Bashiri Johnson on drums, Ronnie Cuber: baritone sax, Andy Snitzer:
tenor sax and Randy Brecker: trumpet.

Bobby Broom left the band year before last. I am going to see/hear the good
doctor tonight for MARDI GRAS, so I will let you know the current lineup.
